ISLAMABAD: Malik Mumtaz Qadri, who assassinated Punjab Governor Salman Taseer has been handed over to police on one-day remand on Wednesday, ARY NEWS reports.
Qadri, who was part of Taseer's security detail, was presented before a magistrate in IslamabadAmid tight security and will appear in an anti-terrorism court on Thursday, lawyer Mohammad Ashraf Gujjar said.
The suspect was making his first appearance in an Islamabad court where a judge remanded him in custody. Lawyers who were not involved in the case threw handfuls of rose petals over his head and a rowdy crowd slapped him on the back and kissed his cheek as he was escorted inside.
Magistrate Kamran Bisharat Mufi granted his physical remand to police for only one day.
"Police have charged Qadri with murder, terrorism and violence," another lawyer, Farooq Sulehria said.
An FIR has been registered at Kohisar police station of Islamabad on the complain of Taseer's son.
Police investigations are focusing on whether the bearded police commando acted alone or as part of a wider conspiracy.
A lawyer from Islamabad's high court, Farooq Sulehria, told AFP that the assassin would find no shortage of support.
"We will provide all legal support to Mumtaz Hussain Qadri, we will fight for him in the court," said Sulehria.
